Dark Matter: Howard Arkley and Roger Kemp
Benefactors Gallery, 4 September 2025 - 16 October 2025

This exhibition brings together an unlikely combination of Roger Kemp and Howard Arkley. Like many artists, the two share a passion for music. Kemp was interested in the Steiner idea of Eurythmy or visible music and became pre-occupied with ideas of pattern and rhythm. Howard Arkley is represented by a major early work, Seltsamer, (1975) which dates from his very first exhibition at Tolarno Gallery in Melbourne. At the time that he was producing delicate black and white works, and experimenting with the range of marks available using an airbrush. This work and the accompanying drawings bring to mind sparse musical notation or the wave patterns of a vibrating string.
